Fall in the Smoky Mountains
November 4, 2015The lazy days of summer!
May 20, 2015Well, school is out for the summer around here; however, things never really slow down at Liberty University anymore. I have taught at this institution for 20 years now, and I have noticed a trend lately–that things don’t slow down all that much around here like they used to. Take for instance, just as little as five years ago, one could drive onto this campus the week after graduation, and it looked like a complete ghost town. Even the city of Lynchburg was different when school wasn’t in session. Things just weren’t very lively around town without the energy that the students bring.
Now, for what reasons I can’t explain, things don’t slow all that much anymore. I can’t see much difference from spring to summer to fall. The campus is almost just as busy now as it was three weeks ago when the over 14,000 residential students were here. Liberty offers a lot more summer residential classes now than it used to, for one reason. This is the second year that I have taught a digital photography class as a summer intensive. I have to say it is very different from a class during the regular semester. For one, there are a lot fewer students in a class; from over 20 sometimes to just a handful. I think that makes for better learning anyway. I also get to know each student better on a personal basis. The environment seems less stressful and more laid back. I really do enjoy these summer classes more! Below is a snapshot of my present digital photography class.
The Legend himself will be here in Lynchburg, VA tonight!
April 27, 2015Tonight, for one night only, the legendary photographer, Bill Fortney will be sharing his insight and images in a public forum on the campus of Liberty University in the DeMoss hall room 4059 at 7pm. Mr. Fortney has done it all, so to speak, in an almost 50-year career as a photographer. What more can I say, check out his website for yourself: www.billfortney.com
Spend some time soaking in some great images tonight as Bill shares. The event is free and open to all. I hope to see you there!

Might be the world’s most expensive chess set…
January 12, 2015It’s Canon vs Nikon lenses used as chess pieces. The black are Nikons and the white lenses are Canons. The pawns look to be 70-200mm 2.8 zooms which list for around $2,300 a piece. The two rooks look to be 300mm f2.8 telephoto lenses. The knights must be 400mm f2.8 lenses. The bishops look to be 500mm f4 teles. The queen must be a 600mm f4 and the king must be a 800mm f5.6. At current market prices, each side rings in at around $100,000. That’s one expensive chess set!
The best high school offensive line prospect that no one’s ever heard of!
December 29, 2014His name is Sam Isaacson. He is a towering 6-foot, 7-inches tall and 300 pounds of pure bulk mass. He stands his ground against the most massive of foes. He’s surprisingly light on his feet for someone of his size and stature. Built to the hilt and programmed to protect and defend even the swiftest of competitors. He plays for one of the most prolific and successful high school teams in the entire state of Virginia, Liberty Christian Academy, who is coached by the brilliant Frank Rocco (113-12). His list of personal accolades includes the following:
- 2014 VISAA all-state, division one, first team offense (link)
- Listed in the top 12 on Rivals.com 2015 Virginia offensive tackle prospects (link)
- Listed #71 on the Roanoke Times’ top 100 Virginia high school prospects for 2015 (link)
- Nominated for the “2014 Titan Trophy” for best overall central Virginia area high school football player (link)
- Elected a member of the “2014 Dirty Dozen” team for best central Virginia area HS linemen
- 2013 VISAA all-conference, Blue Ridge, first team offense as a junior
I have to admit, I’m a bit partial when it comes to my opinion of Sam Isaacson; for see, he’s my son.
Let me address you college football coaches out there. Have any of you seen or heard of Sam Isaacson before? Who among you doesn’t need an offensive linemen 6′, 7″ and 300 lbs? What are you waiting for? Give Sam a holler! Don’t you owe it to yourself, your team and your school to find the best available players? I implore you to check out Sam Isaacson, the best offensive line prospect that you’ve never heard of.
